INSPIRATION

We want to share some worldwide survey results, academic findings and other sources of inspiration that support our view on organizational culture and competencies of the future.

Mission and purpose as important drivers of high employee engagement

In late 2020, Gallup convened 15 virtual meetings with 150 chief human resources officers (CHROs) of large companies worldwide to better understand how the world’s top HR leaders are maintaining high levels of engagement and productivity during this extended crisis and what they are watching for in the future.

Many companies have reported increased employee engagement since the COVID-19 pandemic began, with some CHROs noting substantial gains. They are quick to recognize that ‘nothing brings people together like a crisis’. They have relied heavily on their organization’s mission and purpose to inspire their teams over the past year.

Why connection is more than EVER key
in today’s leadership

Slowly but surely, we are leaving the era in which a purely analytical and rational way of functioning has always taken centre stage.

We are moving on to a new era: the era of “emotion”. As such, it will be the companies in which that “emotion” plays a pivotal role that will become the protagonists of the success-stories of the future. It will be those companies that promote “feel good” concepts and help people fulfill their dreams that will be the ones to make the cut.

A couple of guiding principles that lead to the path of being successful in this new era:

Be Generous

Just to be perfectly clear from the outset: “generosity” does not mean giving away or endlessly doing good by financially supporting charitable organisations.

“Generosity” does mean developing the skills and ability to give yourself.

Love what you do and do what you love

The successful companies of the future are those companies that have the know-how of aligning their own mission and values with the mission and values of their employees, so as to create a healthy company culture.

Only if employees genuinely can’t wait to walk through their office door and “breathe” the company culture, are they able to connect with customers. Yet how many people truly feel connected with the mission and values of the organization they work for? How many people truly feel passionate to pull their weight?

Every person in a leadership position needs to be like a top playing captain of a sports team: well-trained, strong and with a healthy balance in both body and mind. Then, from this position of strength, he or she can create a solid mission and contribute in a positive way to the vision of the team he plays with – pushing his or her team all the way to the top.

And, in the light of the above, it goes unspoken that such a top playing captain is made out of far more than a mere check-list of job-related competencies.

Employees with high wellbeing are
more resilient

To say the "world's largest work-from-home experiment" has presented challenges would be an understatement. These challenges range from strategy and brand loyalty to customer centricity and employee wellbeing.

But often, employee wellbeing isn't leaders' first consideration or priority.

While it might have been easy to dismiss wellbeing as simply a personal matter in the past, top leaders and managers who emphasize it will see significant returns.

Employees with high wellbeing are more resilient during widespread or personal tough times, are less likely to have unplanned days out of the office and have better performance than those with low wellbeing.

Employee wellbeing isn't something leaders can afford to overlook - on the contrary, it's more important than ever. Leaders who start prioritizing employee wellbeing will start seeing how it correlates with employee engagement - and, in turn, a host of personal and business outcomes.
